Much of the age-related deterioration of facial skin has to do with the support layers for the outer skin. Microneedling or collagen induction therapy is a proven treatment to restore vitality to skin tissues. Christina Stokke, Dr. Kevin Stokke, and the team at Nouvelle Medical Aesthetics in Davis, California, recommend microneedling as a treatment for facial rejuvenation, acne scars, decrease the appearance of pores, fine lines and wrinkles, pigmentation concerns, surgical scars, and stretch marks. Microneedling Q & A

How does microneedling work?

The body’s regenerative systems include the capacity to replace collagen and other skin tissues, though these systems typically stay dormant until an injury occurs. Many of the more recent cosmetic technologies, such as lasers and intense pulsed light, create a controlled damage to tissue below the surface of the skin to stimulate this regenerative system.

Microneedling also creates controlled damage by penetrating the skin with small needles, creating tiny injuries that stimulate new collagen production without causing a great deal of pain or damage to other tissue. As new collagen is generated, depressions in skin fill in, smoothing overall skin appearance. In some cases, microneedling reduces the appearance of skin pigmentation problems, such as age spots, uneven complexion, or some effects of rosacea.

What skin issues can microneedling treat?

While many patients use microneedling to treat problems on the face, it is not limited to that, and may be used virtually anywhere on the body where new collagen production will be effective. Anywhere that scars, stretch marks, wrinkles, and pigment issues appear could be candidates for treatment. Microneedling is occasionally combined with platelet-rich plasma therapy, or PRP, as a way of improving its effectiveness.

What can you expect during treatment?

At Nouvelle Medical Aesthetics, your comfort is of utmost importance. We used a specifically compounded numbing agent prior to your treatment. Hyaluronic acid is used during the procedure because it adds natural hydration to your skin, which promotes better outcomes. The entire microneedling procedure typically takes about 15-30 minutes, but it may be longer depending on how large of an area is being treated.

Is the microneedling procedure safe?

There have been some scary news reports in the news regarding disease transmission during microneedling procedures.  Do not bargain shop when looking for solutions to your aesthetic concerns.  Our quality and safety record speaks for itself.  In 7 years of proding this procedure, zero infections or cross contamination.  Our licensed staff use only disposable, single use tips.  Under carefully controlled conditions and knowledgeable medical experience, microneedling is quite safe.  We use the FDA approved Rejuvapen for our treatments and licensed, trained personnel.

Words to the wise: 1) Please do not bargain shop for your aesthetic procedures.  2) Do not use home trend rolling devices than can cause scar tissue to form.  The improper use of these devices may lead to infection.  3) Find experienced practitioners like Christina Stokke and her licensed, professional staff at Nouvelle Medical Aesthetics to ensure you get the safest and best results possible from your microneedling procedure.
